The Barbers

“The Barbers” started out as a small personal project walking to and from the bar I worked at in downtown Birmingham Al. I used to pass a gentlemen who would sit out front of the shop he worked at almost everyday. It was always a friendly “hello” and then a chat, and I eventually asked if I could make his portrait and that’s when it clicked… Right there is roughly 7 black owned and operated barbershops, some dating back as early as the 1920’s. I figured why not try and immerse myself in these shops I walk by everyday and make some photographs of them, the shops and the lifestyle. I returned back to every shop with a framed portrait of the owners and they were more then grateful. I would like to take the time to thank each and every individual that took the time to invite me into there second homes and treat me like a friend of 20 years.
