Finding Faith

 “Finding Faith” is a photographic journey through central Alabama’s smallest towns. Over the course of 4 years Jerimiah has photographed and interviewed countless men and women living above & below the poverty line. Jerimiah has observed that despite their circumstances, his subjects have an unmoving faith, believing their fate to be “In the hands of God”. Having grown up in a small rural town with not much opportunity he find’s himself at ease amongst his subjects. Not having found his own faith yet, He delve’s deeply into this theme, seeking to understand his subjects at their core. To further explore the story behind the portrait, Jerimiah ask’s each person he photograph’s the same question : “What does faith mean to you?”. This question is answered in the form of numerous handwritten letters, audio recordings & video vignettes. Displayed with the photographs, it tell's a story that aims to open the eyes and the minds of even the Faithless.

Jerimiah's work explores the often unseen, nameless people of rural Alabama, using photography as a way of sharing their stories with a broader audience. The relationships Jerimiah has formed by listening to and engaging with his subjects are essential to the resulting imagery. As an artist, an important part of his practice includes revisiting each person he photograph's with the final printed images, inviting collaboration and further strengthening the bond between photographer and subject. Through these bonds, he aim's to capture moments that transport the viewer and invite them to confront their own understanding of religion, poverty and the American South. His current project “Finding Faith” has become an exploration of not only faith in God, but faith in humanity. “Finding Faith” will be presented as a multimedia exhibition of framed photographs, original letters, audio recordings and video vignettes, inviting the audience to examine their own beliefs.
